New York Lighting Control Systems and Backup Power Solutions

Lighting Control Systems and Backup Power Solutions

Commercial and residential.

Absolute Electrical Services is committed to serving the greater New York Metropolitan area, and we work with top brands to ensure that our customers are able to enjoy the efficiency and practicality that comes with utilizing the latest technology available.

Acuity Brands is a North American market leader when it comes to providing reliable lighting solutions and we’ve found them to be a trusted resource. While working for a customer in Downtown Manhattan, Absolute Electrical Services installed an Acuity Brands’ lighting control package.

This particular 2019 installation is a significant update to previous lighting control systems. It essentially controls all of the lighting, switches and occupancy sensors—some of which are dimming while others are not. This particular job involved working with a CAT 5 or CAT 6 wiring from the vacancy sensors and switches/ dimmers to the relays. The relays then turn the lights on and off seamlessly.

Additional work in 2019 saw Absolute Electrical Services return to Downtown Manhattan. Our customer was in need of a backup power solution for their establishment, and to meet that need we worked with Myers EPS, a leading company whose products include UPS/ Inverters, converters and batteries, some of which can be custom-designed for industrial and commercial back up power systems and DC power plants.

Absolute Electrical Services provided our customer with a Myers emergency battery backup for their fixtures. The backup power system gives a constant report of the power supply, and once a month the system automatically runs a test on itself to rule out any potential issues. Additionally, it controls any fixture without separate emergency packs inside.

The aforementioned projects took time, expertise and an attention to detail that each and every licensed technician employed by Absolute Electrical Services possesses. We look forward to continuing to serve clients in the Downtown Manhattan and greater New York Metropolitan area.

Lighting control systems and backup power address two sides of the same goal: having your building do exactly what you want with electricity, whether the grid is cooperating or not. On the lighting side that means dimmers, occupancy and daylight sensors, scene controls, timeclocks, and networked systems that let a home or business tune light levels by room, zone, or schedule. On the backup side it means standby generators, automatic transfer switches, and increasingly battery storage that keep the lights, heat, sump pumps, and refrigeration running through an outage. People reach out after storm-season blackouts, when energy bills climb, or when a renovation is the right moment to make lighting smarter and more efficient.

Across Long Island and the five boroughs, doing this correctly starts with load calculations and clean integration. A standby generator has to be sized to the circuits it protects, connected through an automatic transfer switch that safely isolates the house from utility lines, and placed to meet clearance and local code; battery systems add their own interconnection and permitting steps. Lighting controls need the right dimmers for LED loads to avoid flicker, proper neutral wiring, and commissioning so sensors and scenes behave as intended. Absolute Electric designs the control layout and backup scheme together, wires the panel and transfer equipment, and tests the system under load so it performs when it actually matters.

Controls and backup power connect to the rest of your electrical system. A generator or battery install may need a panel upgrade or a dedicated subpanel, while a lighting retrofit pairs naturally with LED upgrades, surge protection, and new circuits. Lighting Controls & Backup Power FAQs

How is a standby generator sized for my home or business?
We run a load calculation on the circuits you want protected, from heating and sump pumps to refrigeration and essential lights. That determines generator capacity and whether a whole-building or managed essential-loads approach through the transfer switch makes more sense.
What does an automatic transfer switch actually do?
It detects an outage, disconnects your building from the utility, and starts the generator, then switches back when power returns. This isolation is critical: it protects utility crews from backfeed and keeps your wiring and the generator from fighting each other.
Will dimmers work with my LED fixtures?
Only the right ones. Many LEDs flicker or buzz on legacy dimmers, so we specify LED-rated controls matched to your fixtures and confirm neutral wiring is present. Proper selection and commissioning give you smooth dimming and reliable scene and sensor behavior.
Is battery storage a real alternative to a generator?
For many properties, yes, and some owners combine both. Batteries run quietly and instantly but have finite capacity, so they suit shorter outages and essential loads, while generators sustain longer blackouts. We weigh runtime needs, fuel, and interconnection rules for your site.
Do these systems require permits and inspection?
Yes. Generators, transfer switches, and battery systems require electrical permits and inspection, and jurisdictions across Long Island and the NYC boroughs differ in their requirements. We handle filing and inspection so your backup and control systems are both code-compliant and safe.
