The incorporated Village of Babylon packs a lot of history into a tight grid, and the homes along Main Street, Grand Avenue, and the side streets off Deer Park Avenue show it: Victorians, foursquares, and Colonials that went up when the village was a Gilded Age resort, mixed with cottages and bungalows from the early twentieth century. Houses this old were wired generations ago, often with knob-and-tube runs still buried in the plaster, ceramic-fuse panels down in the cellar, and two-prong outlets in the front parlors. Add a renovated kitchen, central air, and a home office to a 1910 frame house and the original service simply cannot keep up. Those are the puzzles our electricians untangle on the village's shaded blocks.
Head south from the business district toward Fire Island Avenue and the village gives way to water. Babylon's canals and boat basins open onto the Great South Bay, and the ferries that run from here reach the Fire Island communities of Fair Harbor, Kismet, and Saltaire. Homes along the canals and near Argyle Lake, the dammed pond that Carlls River feeds at the center of town, sit low and take on salt air and tidal flooding that rot meter pans and pit outdoor receptacles. Anything added waterside, from a new dock outlet to a lift pump, has to clear Village Hall on West Main Street, where permitting runs on its own village schedule rather than the county's.
We cover the whole of Babylon, from the compact village grid around the Main Street and Deer Park Avenue crossing out to the hamlets of the surrounding township. Our trucks work the older homes near the LIRR station, the shops and restaurants of the downtown corridor, the canal-front and bay-side properties off Fire Island Avenue, and the blocks ringing Argyle Park. When a job sits out on the Fire Island beaches reached by ferry across the Great South Bay, we handle those too.
